Let's face it, there's lots of amazing Bad Boy stallions out there to choose from. Some are amazing individuals and can't pass on those genes, some don't get picked as the homecoming king but create incredible offspring and then there's a few like Topsail Whiz, Smart Little Lena and High Brow Cat that are both.
There's breeding programs that are similar to fashion designers trying to pick next season's hot color. And nothing against a little color, but our goal is to produce exceptional offspring instead of riding the stallion popularity trends. With the help of our trainers, we evaluate our mares strengths and weaknesses, look at the success of their previous offspring if they've had them, and choose stallions that we believe will produce winners – not once, but consistently. Looks are certainly important, but our primary criteria in choosing a stallion is that horses contribution to the intelligence, heart and trainability of its offspring. Our mares are chosen for their ability to imprint their characteristics on their offspring and we believe the role of the stallion in the genetic soup is to complement our mare versus throw a duplicate of themselves. Of course it's a lot of trial and error, which is why you will see us breeding our newer mares to a variety of stallions to determine which characteristics will transfer and be improved, and which ones won't. A lot of programs breed to in-house stallions which is generally a disaster, we don't stand a stallion and won't so we always have the flexibility to breed to the best stallion for that mare and the intended use of the offspring.
